Foundry: Blending History and Modernism in Salt Lake City

A Unique Design Concept by Mohamed Shabana

Foundry is a commercial design project that seamlessly merges history and modernism to repurpose an established property near downtown Salt Lake City. Sustainability is a key theme throughout the design, with a focus on using reused and recycled materials. The project stands out with its contrasting elements and the dreamlike state it creates within the interior spaces.

The exterior design of Foundry is a striking contrast to the ethereal and dreamlike interior. The building combines the historic charm of original brickwork with modern geometric shapes, showcased in the glass greenhouse. This fusion of history and modernism gives the property a unique character and visual appeal.

Inside, Foundry is a community space that caters to various needs under one roof. The building houses a multi-purpose event hall, a greenhouse, restaurants, outdoor spaces, coffee shops, meeting rooms, and art spaces. The possibilities for this versatile space are endless, allowing it to evolve and adapt to different functions and events.

The realization of Foundry relies on the use of reused and recycled materials. Reclaimed wood, bricks, and copper plates adorn the facades, while geometric shapes in the metal frame of the glass greenhouse add a touch of modernism. The interior finishes feature stucco and reused metal panels, repainted to suit the design concept. Wood floors, natural concrete textures, and local interlocking stone complete the aesthetic.

Foundry covers a total property area of 32,626.77 square feet, with a construction area of 21,073.78 square feet. The project was realized between March 2019 and August 2019, with an expected completion date in the first quarter of 2021. Located on State Street in Salt Lake City, Utah, Foundry is a testament to the harmonious blend of art, architecture, and contemporary design.

Mohamed Shabana, the visionary behind Foundry, wanted to create a space that emphasizes the strong relationship between the past and the present. The sharp geometry added to the old elements and textures creates a visually striking experience. As visitors step inside, they are greeted by different environments and traditional materials accompanied by a variety of music, promoting a sense of psychological comfort and spirituality. Opening doors leads to new spaces and entirely new experiences, enhancing the sense of wonder and discovery.

The design of Foundry required extensive research, focusing on merging multiple concepts under one roof from both an artistic and architectural perspective. Overcoming the challenge of respecting the current situation and the zone's history while achieving the designer's vision was a creative and technical feat.

Foundry has been recognized for its excellence and innovation, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is given to designs that meet professional and industrial requirements while integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics. Foundry's well-designed, practical, and innovative approach contributes to a better world, providing fulfillment and positive experiences for its visitors.
